Special track: BORDERLINE

I’ll try to be as unbiased as possible towards NINE DIRTS. After all, this was released about six years earlier, and of course isn’t meant to measure up, right? Well I guess I shouldn’t say that; indeed, Onitsuka’s music has matured over the years, as has her style in performance. That shouldn’t mean at all that her later performances are better, and I was definitely anticipating my reception of the DVD for months beforehand.

A few things you can look out for throughout the DVD. Firstly, she’s placed a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the foot of her carpet, just in front of her speakers. Secondly, she’s got a bottle of water and a can of Coke behind her. Guess what she goes for the most? And then there’s that one time that Onitsuka turns around to Hal-Oh and he smiles at her. Brief, but nice to see.

Onitsuka Chihiro – PRINCESS BELIEVER

May 7, 2010 at 2:37 pm (Onitsuka Chihiro) (, )

3. Ryuuseigun
4. Ibara no Umi
5. infection
6. King of Solitude
7. infection SPOT (Special Track)

PRINCESS BELIEVER is Onitsuka Chihiro’s second PV clip collection, with the music videos from the This Armor era, and the one from Sugar High. I must say, this is the first PV clip collection I’ve ever purchased; I’m more used to CD+DVD packages and the like. I would’ve simply purchased the complete clips, but I was curious as to what “infection SPOT” was. It wasn’t listed on a lot of sites, so I figured it was a bonus making of or something. But we’ll get to that later.

Onitsuka Chihiro – Sugar High (2CD)

May 5, 2010 at 3:18 pm (Onitsuka Chihiro) ()

2. Koe
3. Rebel Luck
4. Tiger in my Love
5. Castle imitation (album version)
6. Hyouryuu no Hane
7. Suna no Tate
8. King of Solitude
8cm CD
1. Castle imitation
2. Castle imitation (instrumental)

Onitsuka Chihiro’s third album was released a mere nine months after her previous album, This Armor. That said, Sugar High was in no way a rushed release, even though there are only nine songs on the standard version. The first pressing came with an extra CD, the 8cm single of “Caste imitation”, as well as a screensaver. The cover was also slightly different in that the image was reversed, and only had the words “Sugar High” on it. The front of the CD case has a sticker with the upper portion of the un-reversed image. Hence the strange cut-off in the image above. Before I got the CD, that cut-off always confused me.

INSOMNIA had a distinct sound to it. A rather depressing sound to it. This Armor was noticeably lighter, although it still had its dark moments. Sugar High seems to take a completely new direction, although it still has Chihiro’s dark lyrics and amazing ballads. The arrangements are really what changed most; they seem perhaps a tad simpler in instrumentation, and have more focus on piano than even INSOMNIA. And it made for an impressive package.

Onitsuka Chihiro – This Armor

May 4, 2010 at 2:29 pm (Onitsuka Chihiro) (, )

2. Ibara no Umi
3. Shadow
4. everything, in my hands
5. Our Song
6. Ryuuseigun
7. LITTLE BEAT RIFLE (album version)
8. Arrow of Pain
9. infection
10. CROW

Ok so a little word about the next few Chii albums and singles I review. I was able to get my kind Japanese teacher to buy them all for me in Japan, and she would bring them back when she returned. Two months after she bought them. So I had a bit of a waiting time, and a lot of hype. I read up on a lot of other reviews, and I whored out the previews for the songs on iTunes and Amazon.co.jp, and so I had a pretty good idea of what was coming. Sort of.

This Armor is Chii’s second album, and it differs a lot from INSOMNIA in that the sound seems to be overall less depressing. Save for “infection”, the album’s arrangements seem a lot lighter, and she isn’t pushing her vocals as much as she used to.

Onitsuka Chihiro – LAS VEGAS CD+DVD

March 6, 2010 at 4:18 pm (Onitsuka Chihiro) (, )

1. Sweet Rosemary
2. bad trip
3. Rou no Tsubasa
4. Bokura Barairo no Hibi
5. amphibious
7. A Horse and a Queen
8. Rainman
9. Angelina
11. everyhome
1. everyhome -version 1-
2. everyhome -version 2-
3. Bokura Bara-iro no Hibi

A few things before I begin. This is actually my first review where I write within a week of receiving the album. All the other “early” reviews were me backtracking my thoughts to when I first got the album. So yay.

Secondly, I’m very biased towards this album. Going in, I had heard many bad things about the album; about her throat surgery, her hiatus, etc. Even previewing the songs on iTunes, the recording quality did not seem top notch for all the songs, and her voice was noticeably weak.

Thirdly, even for the songs I had heard before (the four songs included on the NINE DIRTS DVD), I was biased, because I had fallen in love with the live versions, and new that the recordings would not measure up.

So how did the album fare? I’ve listened to each track at least 9 times now, so I figure I can make a judgement. I’ll also be including the DVD in this review (since its so short).

Onitsuka Chihiro – DOROTHY

February 16, 2010 at 2:40 am (Onitsuka Chihiro) (, )

Even if you don’t like the album, you have to get it for a cover like that. I mean really.

2. Kagerou
3. X
4. Storyteller
6. I Pass By
7. Kaerimichi wo Nakushite
8. Losing a distance
9. Last Melody
10. Hotaru

DOROTHY is the 5th studio album by Onitsuka Chihiro, and the only one I own besides INSOMNIA thus far. I had seen the PV’s for the album on Universal’s youtube, and was quite excited for the album. It certainly sounded a lot different from her debut album, although I wasn’t sure I wanted more songs like “STEAL THIS HEART” (even if I liked it). More on that in a bit.

Onitsuka Chihiro- Nine Dirts and Snow White Flickers

February 11, 2010 at 8:25 pm (Onitsuka Chihiro) (, )

3. Cage
4. 流星群
5. infection
6. 眩暈
7. everyhome
8. なごり雪
9. You’ve got a friend
10. Angelina
12. 僕等 バラ色の日々
13. いい日旅立ち・西へ

14. Sign
15. 私とワルツを
16. 月光
17. 蛍

Onitsuka Chihiro’s second live DVD features both songs from her Toshiba EMI era and her Universal era. I had seen clips of Ultimate Crash 02 before this, and was for some reason rather prejudiced against this. Perhaps it was due to the fact that no one mentioned this DVD very much, so I assumed the Crash was better. Due to availability, I ended up settling for this one.

I’m glad that I did.

Onitsuka Chihiro – INSOMNIA

February 9, 2010 at 10:23 pm (Onitsuka Chihiro) (, )

1. 月光
2. イノセンス
3. BACK DOOR (album version)
4. edge
5. We can go
6. call
7. シャイン (album version)
8. Cage
9. 螺旋
10. 眩暈
11. 月光 (album version)

Insomnia is the debut album by my favourite artist, Onitsuka Chihiro. So it is fitting that my first review starts with this. I’ve had the album for a while, so I’ll do my best to remember my first impressions.

Onitsuka Chihiro is a singer-songwriter, with what I would think is a pretty unique style. Firstly, she’s a singer-songwriter. That should be enough said there, really. But then, her lyrics are also rare and certainly not typical; they’re often riddled with pain and suffering and ugliness, and it’s so raw and emotional. And then there’s the fact that half of her songs are ballads. You’d think that they’d become very generic after just a few (*cough Koda Kumi*) but they always seemt to stay fresh somehow. Somehow.
